Introduction

Universal Studios Japan transforms ordinary meals into edible entertainment. The food at Universal Studios Japan is quite good! I like it a lot, and I think it’s the best food offered at a theme park in Japan. From Mario’s mushroom kingdom creations to Jaws-themed shark steaks, every bite connects to the movie magic around you. From ¥1,500 budget-friendly lunch sets to ¥5,000 gourmet course meals, USJ has something for every appetite. This isn’t your typical theme park grub—it’s character-driven cuisine where presentation matters as much as flavor.

The best strategy? Mix sit-down meals with portable snacks. Even by theme park standards, entrees are undersized, overpriced, and underwhelming. This is true almost across the board, but there are a few standout exceptions. We’ll guide you to those exceptions. From reservation-only Mario burgers to shark-shaped desserts that taste like cream soda, here’s where your yen gets the biggest payoff.

1. Park Side Grille (パークサイド・グリル)

What to order: Angus Aging Steak 250g (¥4,500)

Inside USJ, you won’t believe this is the same theme park—the atmosphere is luxurious and sophisticated. This full-service steakhouse serves proper aged beef with theatrical flair: you watch the steaks sizzle on the open grill before they reach your table.

2. Three Broomsticks (スリーブルームスティックス)

What to order: Great Feast (¥2,600)

As is the case in Florida and Hollywood, this Wizarding World of Harry Potter restaurant is the best counter service option in the park. It serves a range of high-quality, hearty meals that will (mostly) be familiar to anyone who has dined at one of the other locations. Three Broomsticks is consistently good, with the only real downside being prices (many entrees are over $20). We also suggest grabbing a table in the outside seating area behind the restaurant with a viewing of Hogwarts Castle across Black Lake.

3. Kinopio’s Cafe (キノピオカフェ)

What to order: Fire Flower Spaghetti & Meatballs (¥2,300)

The restaurant is reservation-only, so you’ll need to enter Super Nintendo World first and then scan the QR code displayed on a board located right in front of the restaurant. This is a meal that I honestly crave from time to time. I am obsessed with tomato pasta. Now add meatballs to the mix and a tiny kick of spice, and I am in heaven. This is exactly what the Fire Flower Spaghetti & Meatballs offers. Best of all, they use fresh pasta.

4. Discovery Restaurant (ディスカバリーレストラン)

What to order: Jurassic Hamburg Steak Set (¥1,980)

If you want to fully immerse yourself in the world of Jurassic Park, head straight to Discovery Restaurant. This place is a huge hit because of the realistic dinosaur replicas decorating the interior. It makes you feel like a true jungle explorer while you eat. The hamburg steak comes with rice, onion rings, and what they call a “dinosaur egg”—a crispy potato nest with runny yolk inside.

5. Amity Landing Restaurant (アミティランディングレストラン)

What to order: Shark Meat & Meat Sauce Sandwich (¥1,100)

We have a full review of this JAWS-themed restaurant, which we recommend to anyone who is a fan of the attraction. The details and thematic work here is brilliant, and the restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere that is nice after a busy day of touring the park. The fried chicken is also pretty good. Don’t miss the Jaws Cream Soda Swiss Roll—it literally tastes like cream soda.

6. Happiness Cafe (ハピネスカフェ)

What to order: Stuart’s Bacon Cheeseburger Meal (¥1,850)

Where Happiness Cafe is a real winner is the drink bar, which includes Coke Freestyle and fancy custom espresso machines. Meals are slightly more expensive here than other counter service restaurants, but they include this drink bar, which is a huge plus. After getting up early to be in Osaka for rope drop at USJ, nothing hits the spot like a midday dose of unlimited caffeine.

7. The Dragon’s Pearl (ドラゴンズパール)

What to order: Dragon’s Pearl Combo (¥2,400)

This lesser-known Chinese restaurant is a hidden gem, often with little to no wait. It offers familiar comfort food like fried rice and noodles, perfect when you want something warm and satisfying. The combo packs three dishes on one plate—fried rice, mapo tofu, and fried chicken.

8. Mel’s Drive-In (メルズドライブイン)

What to order: Classic Burger Set (¥1,580)

Step back in time at Mel’s Drive-In, a restaurant modeled after the legendary 1973 film American Graffiti. With vintage American cars parked right out front, the whole place feels like a classic 50s hangout. Eating a juicy burger in a setting that feels like a scene from an old Hollywood movie is an experience all on its own.

9. Beverly Hills Boulangerie (ビバリーヒルズブランジェリー)

What to order: Beverly Hills Chocolate Fondant (¥1,200)
