Introduction
Universal CityWalk Osaka sits between the train station and park gates like a staging area for fun. This outdoor shopping and dining promenade gets dismissed as tourist-trap territory, but it’s actually where some of Osaka’s most reliable chains have set up shop to feed the masses. Universal CityWalk is an entertainment commercial facility located between Universal City Station on the JR Yumesaki Line and Universal Studios Japan, operating until 23:00 — well after USJ closes.
The smart money knows that the real move is the takoyaki and okonomiyaki stalls on the lower level. Multiple Osaka-style street food vendors serve fresh takoyaki for ¥500-600 — proper Osaka takoyaki, not tourist versions. But CityWalk goes deeper than street food. This is where you’ll find branch locations of restaurants that locals queue for downtown, plus some international chains that do their Japanese exclusives right.
Most visitors rush through on their way to Harry Potter World. Those who pause discover that CityWalk’s sprawling multi-level layout houses everything from “TAKOPA,” where six famous and popular Osaka takoyaki shops are gathered in one place to craft beer and American comfort food that isn’t available elsewhere in Kansai. The food is better than it has any right to be in a theme park adjacent mall.
