Introduction
Osaka is Japan’s most exuberant city — a place of neon-lit streets, world-class street food, and a famously welcoming spirit. For Muslim travelers, however, the city presents a familiar challenge: praying on time in a proper place is never a problem in a Muslim-majority country, but when visiting a Muslim-minority country like Japan, finding a decent place to pray can feel like finding an oasis in the middle of the desert. The good news is that Osaka has made real strides. Osaka is one of the most Muslim-friendly cities in Japan, with several mosques, halal restaurants, and halal souvenir shops scattered throughout the city. This includes both dedicated mosques for regular prayers and temporary prayer spaces located in airports, shopping malls, and tourist areas. This guide covers five verified prayer facilities — from a full-service mosque in Nishinari to a prayer room inside JR Osaka Station — to help you plan your itinerary with confidence. For dining options to pair with your visit, see our Osaka halal guide.

It is a large mosque in the Osaka/Kansai area and a center for Islamic cultural events, with the Indonesian Muslim community being very active here. The prayer room is signposted and located on B1, but you must first visit the information desk to request access and obtain the entry code; there are separate prayer rooms for men and women, as well as facilities for wudu. The prayer room is open to every religion, not only Muslims, and as space is limited, each group is given 30 minutes to use the facilities. Its location in the heart of Namba makes it the most convenient drop-in prayer option for tourists exploring Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi.

It was the first prayer room of its kind in the JR group, opened to provide a more comfortable environment for international visitors. The place is comfortable and clean, with the prayer room separated between female and male, each with its own place of ablution. This is the ideal option for travelers transiting through Umeda or arriving by Shinkansen.

With its long-standing history, Osaka Ibaraki Mosque is well worth visiting, especially for those who seek more than a prayer space — with its doors open to all kinds of people, Muslims and non-Muslims alike, it is an encouraging and welcoming community. Besides conducting daily prayers, it also conducts Islamic lectures, Qur’an reading classes, arranges Islamic weddings, and provides jenazah prayer and ghusl services. It has a prayer space, offers prayer items for loan, and has a Qibla marker display. Located in the quieter Ibaraki district north of central Osaka, this mosque suits travelers combining a visit with a day trip toward Kyoto.
5. Kansai International Airport Prayer Rooms — Terminal 1 (関西国際空港礼拝室)

Prayer rooms are available on the 3rd floor and in the international gate area in Terminal 1; the prayer rooms and ablution spaces for use before praying are separated by gender, and prayer rooms can be freely used by all visitors. There are three prayer rooms at Kansai International Airport: two located inside after the checkpoint for international flights (north and south wings), and one before the departure gate on the 3rd floor of Terminal 1, on the same floor as shops and restaurants. The room is spacious and bright with a wudu space, allowing worshippers to be more focused on prayer. This is the most accessible first or last prayer stop for any Muslim traveler flying in or out of Osaka.
Tips for Muslim Travelers in Osaka
- 🕐 Plan around registration desks: Both Namba City and Osaka Station City prayer rooms require you to register at an information counter before access is granted. Allow an extra 10–15 minutes in your schedule, especially during peak tourist seasons (Golden Week, summer, and autumn foliage).
- 📱 Use a prayer time app: Apps such as Muslim Pro or Athan are essential in Osaka, where prayer times shift noticeably across seasons. Osaka Station City’s prayer room closes at 19:00 (20:00 in summer), so check Maghrib times carefully in winter months.
- 🧎 Bring your own prayer mat: While Masjid Istiqlal Osaka and Osaka Ibaraki Mosque provide prayer mats and loan items, shopping-mall prayer rooms may not always have spares available. A compact travel mat takes up minimal luggage space.
- 🕌 Friday Jumu’ah at Masjid Istiqlal Osaka: Friday prayers can be crowded, so arriving early — around 12:00 — is recommended to secure a seat for the 13:00 prayer. The Nishinari area around the mosque is easily reached via the Osaka Loop Line.
- ✈️ Arriving or departing via KIX: The 3F public-area prayer room at Kansai International Airport is open 24 hours, making it ideal for early-morning or late-night flights. Prayer accessories including sarong and mukena (a cloak to cover a woman’s head and body while praying) are provided.
